Biometrics: Video Analysis and Coaching Guide

This guide is for the 3-point turf start profile in the Launch app. Train the highest-impact fixes first.

In the app selector, choose Combine Start. The sample below is a report with a 55/100 start score. Biggest gains are in down-hand setup, first-step shin attack, and turf-clearance projection.

Video recording guidelines for turf start analysis

Part 1: Record The 3-Point Start

Wrong camera setup gives wrong coaching. Keep this simple and repeatable.

  • 1. Side-view, landscape: record from the side at 90 degrees to the lane, phone horizontal, full body in frame.
  • 2. Steady camera: use a tripod. Handheld shake makes event timing and angle values unreliable.
  • 3. Camera settings: minimum 60 fps at 1080p. Higher frame rates help only if lighting stays clean.
  • 4. Bright lighting: athlete and turf markings should stay sharp in every frame.
  • 5. Start in set: begin recording once the athlete is fully set in the 3-point stance, then execute one clear start.

Keep the camera location and stance side consistent between sessions, otherwise trend comparisons are not worth much.

Part 2: Read The Report Card

Sample report: Start score 55/100, Direction Left.

The key moments in this sample are: Set 0.000s, First Move 0.459s, Turf Clearance 0.742s, Touchdown 0.900s. Work through red FIX items first.

Front Shin Angle (Set)

42° OKAY | Target 45-60°

Attack angle in 3-point set. If too vertical, drop hips and push front knee farther over toe to direct force horizontally.

Shoulder-over-Wrist Offset

-0.12 body FIX | Target -0.02 to +0.08

Signed horizontal offset from down-side wrist to shoulder. Stack shoulder over wrist or slightly ahead before launch.

Rear Knee Angle (Set)

122° FIX | Target 90-110°

Rear preload geometry in set. Tighten rear setup so you can strike backward off the turf on push one.

Trunk Angle (Set)

23° GOOD | Target 10-28°

Set posture line from hip to shoulder. Flatten the back and keep hips only slightly above shoulders.

Projection Angle (Turf Clearance)

34° FIX | Target 40-45°

Body projection at clearance. Project forward, not up; keep head down and push turf back through clearance.

Down Hand Lift Time

0.459s FIX | Target ≤ 0.18s

Time from frame-0 set posture to sustained down-hand lift. Reduce hesitation and trigger one clean explosive action.

Trunk Angle (Turf Clearance)

11° FIX | Target 30-45°

Forward lean at clearance. Stay down through the first push so force stays horizontal.

What The Score Means

55/100

A workable baseline. It is not a disaster, but there are obvious setup and launch leaks to fix before chasing finer details.

Coaching Priorities

Fix the launch mechanics in this order.

Veteran coach rule: use the report to narrow focus, not to flood the athlete. Fix two variables, retest, and confirm the change on the next clip.
